Description
This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to use a computer to develop two dimensional patterns for the production of complex shapes in sails and canvas products, and to perform work related calculations.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Interpret information
  • 1.1 Preliminary drawings, sketches or diagrams provided by customer or developed by the enterprise are read and interpreted
  • 1.2 Missing dimensions or other unknown features of the proposed product are determined through consultation with customer or enterprise personnel
  • 1.3 Workplace procedures and instructions are read and interpreted
2 Access software
  • 2.1 Computer is switched on
  • 2.2 Appropriate applications are identified and opened
  • 2.3 Required information is keyed in or transferred from other sources to initiate design or production processes
3 Develop drawings
  • 3.1 Drawings such as two dimensional drawings, based on customer information, are constructed using appropriate software applications
  • 3.2 Knowledge of two dimensional drawing and calculation processes are applied to perform required tasks
4 Mark out and cut out shapes
  • 4.1 Shapes such as two dimensional component shapes, based on customer or workplace information, are marked out and cut out using a plotting table and appropriate software applications
  • 4.2 Finished work is checked for accuracy and conformance with specifications
  • 4.3 Work is conducted according to OHS practices
5 Perform calculations
  • 5.1 Spreadsheets or other appropriate software applications are used to perform simple materials calculations, financial tasks and costing
  • 5.2 Spreadsheets are developed and applied
6 Save, document and communicate data
  • 6.1 Data, drawings and other outputs are saved electronically and in hard copy form using established workplace file and documentation formats
  • 6.2 Other work related information is stored in accordance with established workplace procedures
  • 6.3 Data and associated information are passed on to personnel responsible for further action within the organisation
7 Shut down computer and associated equipment
  • 7.1 Software applications are properly exited
  • 7.2 Computer is properly shut down and switched off
