Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to conduct asphalt paver operations in civil construction.It applies to those working in operational roles. The individual is generally a skilled operator and may provide theoretical advice and support a team. Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and industry sectors. Relevant information must be sourced prior to application of the unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to conduct asphalt paver operations
  • 1.1 Obtain, interpret and confirm work requirements
  • 1.2 Access, interpret and apply asphalt paver operations documentation and confirm the work activity is compliant
  • 1.3 Identify environmental issues and potential hazards, and assess and address risks within scope of own role and according to workplace procedures
  • 1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment required for work activities
  • 1.5 Confirm and comply with environmental protection, safety and traffic management signage requirements
  • 1.6 Determine material to be laid and handling procedures to be employed
  • 1.7 Select plant, tools and equipment required for tasks, check for faults, and report or rectify in scope of own role
  • 1.8 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures and identify steps required in case of fire, accident and other emergencies
2. Set up asphalt paver
  • 2.1 Carry out start-up, park, shutdown and secure equipment procedures
  • 2.2 Adjust, change and inflate tyres as required
  • 2.3 Set equipment to correct levels for the laying of materials
  • 2.4 Set heating controls for the screed board
  • 2.5 Install feeder bin where required
  • 2.6 Check materials spreading controls for correct operation
3. Operate asphalt paver
  • 3.1 Drive and operate equipment according to task requirements
  • 3.2 Engage delivery vehicles without bumping
  • 3.3 Maintain uniform speed required during spreading operations
  • 3.4 Monitor and maintain asphalt mix
  • 3.5 Maintain communication with screed hand and confirm materials are being spread to specifications
  • 3.6 Monitor movement of the plant and confirm safety of asphalt crew
4. Carry out operator maintenance
  • 4.1 Prepare machine for maintenance
  • 4.2 Conduct inspection and fault finding
  • 4.3 Carry out scheduled maintenance tasks according to workplace procedures
  • 4.4 Process written maintenance records according to workplace procedures
5. Relocate paver
  • 5.1 Prepare paver for relocation
  • 5.2 Drive paver safely on highways and construction sites
6. Clean up
  • 6.1 Clear work area and dispose of and recycle materials as required according to workplace procedures and environmental requirements
  • 6.2 Clean, check, perform maintenance on in scope of own role, and store plant, tools and equipment
  • 6.3 Carry out housekeeping to workplace requirements
