Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to maintain the health and safety of offenders and promote a safe environment.An individual undertaking this role may work with moderate support. The role involves explicit tasks involving a limited number of familiar steps.The skills and knowledge described in this unit must be applied within the legislative, regulatory and policy environment in which they are carried out. Organisational policies and procedures must be consulted and adhered to, particularly those related to health and safety of offenders and interaction with offenders.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Maintain the health of offenders
  • 1.1 Identify the individual needs of offenders and how they relate to the correctional environment
  • 1.2 Interact with offenders to identify issues impacting their wellbeing
  • 1.3 Provide offenders the information they need to protect their health, and avoid stress and risk to their welfare
  • 1.4 Assist offenders to identify and develop strategies to resolve problems that may affect their health and welfare
  • 1.5 Report health and safety concerns to authorised people
  • 1.6 Refer offenders to relevant specialist services in accordance with policies and guidelines
2 Resolve safety concerns
  • 2.1 Assess risks to safety and respond, giving priority to the protection of people involved
  • 2.2 Assess incidents and call for extra support in accordance with emergency procedures
  • 2.3 Respond immediately to requests for support from colleagues
  • 2.4 Provide information about the incident and participate in review of the incident and response
  • 2.5 Record all incidents in the relevant organisational formats
  • 2.6 Ensure the environment is maintained to prevent and remove hazards
3 Promote safety
  • 3.1 Access organisational resources to maintain currency in relation to emergency responses
  • 3.2 Promote safe practices in all activities
  • 3.3 Supervise the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) by offenders for all activities requiring it
  • 3.4 Ensure personal conduct with offenders reflects human rights practices and organisational code of conduct
