Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to breakdown a script or performance outline to determine production resources and costs for any production within the cultural industries. A script is used as the generic term for a source document from which production plans can be generated. Other types of source documents might be texts, daily production schedule/running sheets, event running sheets, artistic plans, etc. This activity would normally be undertaken by a department head or the production manager. This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to breakdown a script or performance outline to determine production resources and costs for any production within the cultural industries. Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Identify resource requirements from script or performance outline
  • 1.1 Read and analyse script/performance outline scene by scene to establish detailed resource requirements.
  • 1.2 Establish appropriate depth and detail of information to inform production planning and decision making.
2 Prepare and present estimates
  • 2.1 Make informed estimates of production resource requirements taking into account all relevant considerations and using appropriate research methods.
  • 2.2 Accurately calculate and prepare estimates of production times.
  • 2.3 Liaise with relevant colleagues to discuss requirements and confirm production requirements.
  • 2.4 Identify potential problems with conflicting production requirements, and take appropriate action to resolve.
  • 2.5 Clarify requirements, roles and responsibilities between different production areas.
  • 2.6 Present estimates to relevant colleagues for discussion, negotiating changes and compromises as necessary.
3 Prepare a schedule of resources
  • 3.1 Establish costings and availability of required resources from reliable contacts and information sources.
  • 3.2 Prepare and present budget to relevant personnel for approval, ensuring necessary modifications and compromises are incorporated.
  • 3.3 Ensure budget reflects realistic achievement of creative and technical production requirements, availability of resources and personnel requirements.
  • 3.4 Compile, adjust and finalise a resource schedule, including adequate contingency plans.

Underpinning skills and knowledge
Assessment must include evidence of the following knowledge and skills:
format, content and meaning of script/production schedule to allow for effective interpretation
understanding of the artistic and technical elements of a production in a given industry context
research skills, sufficient to source information, costings and gain quotes
sources of human, physical and financial resources for particular types of production
costing techniques for different types of production resources in relation to budget development
effective communication and negotiation techniques
relevant industrial awards and enterprise agreements that affect production resource planning
organisational and legislative Occupational Health and Safety requirements.
Linkages to other units
This unit has linkages to a range of production planning and operations units found in the Entertainment and Film, TV Radio and Multimedia Training Packages. It is strongly recommended that this unit be assessed with or after the following units:
CUFPOP05B - Book and coordinate production resources
CUEFIN01B - Develop a budget
Critical aspects of evidence
The following evidence is critical to the judgement of competence in this unit:
effective use of analytical skills to determine resource requirements
ability to negotiate with a production and design team to develop workable resource plans
sound knowledge of budgeting/costing in the context of production planning.
Method and context of assessment
The assessment context must provide for:
practical demonstration of skills through the development of a resource schedule for at least two different productions
development of resource schedules within commercially realistic time constraints
involvement of and interaction with a production and design team to reflect the communication and negotiation aspects of the unit.

Assessment may incorporate a range of methods to assess practical skills and the application of essential underpinning knowledge, and might include:
review of resource schedules prepared by the candidate
project activity to allow the candidate to create and update resource schedules for different productions
written or oral questioning to test knowledge of the production elements, industrial awards and Occupational Health and Safety requirements
case studies and problem solving activities to assess ability to develop resource schedules for different types of production
review of portfolios of evidence and third party workplace reports of on-the job performance by the candidate.

Assessment methods should closely reflect workplace demands and the needs of particular groups (e.g. people with disabilities, and people who may have literacy or numeracy difficulties such as speakers of languages other than English, remote communities and those with interrupted schooling).
