Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to do high resolution conform and colour grading of moving images. It involves interpreting briefs and preparing assets for colour grading, before completing primary and secondary colour grading. The unit applies to those who work in television and digital cinema, and use and manipulate colour to create the overall look and colour of the final product. Colourists work with directors, producers, post-production supervisors, editors, audio post-production and technical staff.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Clarify post-production briefs
  • 1.1 Obtain brief and confirm production requirements and timelines in consultation with required personnel
  • 1.2 Select and test codecs for acquisition in collaboration with camera operators
  • 1.3 Evaluate creative treatment for colour grade of program
  • 1.4 Select suitable colour grading software for work
  • 1.5 Test workflow for proposed media and confirm metadata compatible with chosen software, rectifying if required
2. Prepare assets for colour grade
  • 2.1 Check video monitor calibration and organise correction as required
  • 2.2 Choose media drive with required performance for media assets
  • 2.3 Ingest media and metadata assets and make required adjustments for colourspace variations
  • 2.4 Check transferred metadata references desired edits according to production requirements and adjust as required
  • 2.5 Perform backups of all supplied and generated media and metadata
3. Perform primary colour grade
  • 3.1 Select lookup table (LUT) for media that meets production requirements where necessary
  • 3.2 Read and check contrast and colour values using technical scopes
  • 3.3 Adjust contrast, colour and saturation of clips to correct for imbalances and set to neutral tone
  • 3.4 Ensure sequential shots from scenes are matched according to production requirements
  • 3.5 Adjust neutral tone for creative effect according to production requirements as required
4. Perform secondary colour grade
  • 4.1 Choose clips that require secondary colour grading
  • 4.2 Make selective adjustments to parts of images based on colour, contrast or shapes
  • 4.3 Combine multiple secondary corrections in one clip
  • 4.4 Adjust and change values of secondary colour corrections over time as required
  • 4.5 Create and store different colour grade versions of same clip as required
  • 4.6 Discuss primary and secondary colour grading with required personnel and make changes as required
5. Create and output deliverables
  • 5.1 Check production requirements and supplied specification documents for required output files
  • 5.2 Create low resolution output files
  • 5.3 Create high resolution output files and confirm compliance with specification documents
  • 5.4 Create metadata files as required
  • 5.5 Archive media and metadata according to organisational procedures
