Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to select and rehearse repertoire as part of a backup group.The unit applies to those who are musicians and vocalists and who accompany and support solo artists and contribute to the selection of repertoire. They may perform in any genre.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Clarify backup group requirements
- 1.1 Confirm performance requirements in consultation with required personnel
- 1.2 Listen to and analyse work of solo artist for whom backup is being provided
- 1.3 Discuss and clarify number and type of performers required in backup group in consultation with solo artist
- 1.4 Establish nature and extent of own contribution to backup group
- 1.5 Confirm schedule leading up to performance and plan for private practice and rehearsal time
- 1.6 Document use of personal practice time for developing own accompaniment performance skills in line with required performance standard
2. Select repertoire
- 2.1 Select a variety of items suited to purpose of performance and solo artist’s style in collaboration with required personnel
- 2.2 Discuss selected items, and agree on a program that provides balance and variety in line with performance requirements
- 2.3 Obtain final sign off on program as required
3. Rehearse repertoire
- 3.1 Set-up and warm-up in group rehearsals in line with work health and safety (WHS) principles
- 3.2 Attend rehearsals with required materials and rehearse repertoire pieces together as a group and with solo artist as required
- 3.3 Achieve required sound and balance between lead and backing players using listening skills and adjusting playing and volume as required
- 3.4 Discuss stylistic and interpretive issues with group members while maintaining flow of rehearsals and quality of performance
- 3.5 Identify and resolve technical and stagecraft issues in collaboration with other group members
- 3.6 Incorporate feedback and implement strategies for improving own performance
