Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to work effectively in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander primary health care by integrating knowledge of historical, social, and other significant factors that impact the health and wellbeing of, and service delivery to, Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities. It covers skills required to work in culturally appropriate and safe ways and to deliver services according to primary health care principles.This unit is specific to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people working as health workers or health practitioners in a multidisciplinary primary health care team. It underpins effective performance in a range of roles at different levels of seniority.The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State or Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice.No regulatory requirement for certification, occupational or business licensing is linked to this unit at the time of publication. Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Identify factors impacting on Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander primary health care.
- 1.1. Identify national and local historical factors for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people that impact their health and wellbeing, and the provision of primary health care.
- 1.2. Identify and evaluate the impact of social, political, economic and environmental factors on the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.
2. Work according to primary health care principles.
- 2.1. Ensure Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander primary health care principles underpin own service provision and work practices.
- 2.2. Deliver services in ways that support self-determination and empowerment in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people and communities.
- 2.3. Identify ways to assist Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander clients to achieve greater access and equity in health services.
- 2.4. Determine ways to establish and maintain networks with health care agencies and associated services to support Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander health care.
3. Work and communicate in culturally appropriate and safe ways.
- 3.1. Show respect for local community values, beliefs and gender roles when providing health care to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.
- 3.2. Communicate in culturally appropriate and safe ways with clients, their significant others and community members during all interactions.
- 3.3. Deliver health services according to organisational policies, regulatory requirements and cultural safety protocols for the community.
- 3.4. Maintain confidentiality of client and community information regardless of family and community pressures or status.
- 3.5. Identify any cultural factors that produce stress, impact personal wellbeing or have potential to impact on own work practices, and report as appropriate.
