Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to safely prepare and use adhesives to join textile products.This unit applies to individuals working in accordance with pre-determined specifications and established procedures.No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Determine joining requirements
  • 1.1 Identity materials to be joined and specific adhesives required from work specifications
  • 1.2 Identify and comply with work health and safety requirements for adhesive use
  • 1.3 Select tools, equipment and materials for work based on joining requirements
2. Prepare adhesives
  • 2.1 Select appropriate tools and materials to prepare work piece surfaces and application of adhesive
  • 2.2 Check adhesive manufacturer safety requirements and take prescribed precautions before using adhesives
  • 2.3 Prepare adhesive in accordance with manufacturer instructions
3. Apply adhesive and bond materials
  • 3.1 Prepare work piece surfaces for application of adhesive as recommended by adhesive manufacturer
  • 3.2 Anchor or otherwise stabilise work piece surfaces to be bonded
  • 3.3 Apply adhesive and join surfaces in accordance with manufacturer instructions
  • 3.4 Allow joins to cure for specified time
  • 3.5 Apply required heat to the work piece to assist in curing joins in accordance with work health and safety requirements
  • 3.6 Remove work piece and inspect and test joins for strength
  • 3.7 Identify and rectify any deficiencies to achieve required quality standards
4. Document and complete operations
  • 4.1 Dispose of or store remaining adhesive in a safe, secure location based on product requirements
  • 4.2 Clean and store tools and equipment securely and in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 4.3 Clean and maintain work area to ensure safe and efficient operations
  • 4.4 Complete documentation in accordance with workplace procedures
