Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to work as part of the multidisciplinary health care team providing care for people requiring mental health services.Enrolled nurses working in the mental health care hold and apply specialised in-depth knowledge, integrate theory and practice and make reliable clinical assessments and judgements.This unit applies to enrolled nurses, registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA), seeking specialisation in enrolled nurse work that is carried out in consultation and collaboration with registered nurses, and under direct or indirect supervisory arrangements aligned to the NMBA regulatory authority legislative requirements.The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian Standards and industry codes of practice.No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Work as part of a multidisciplinary health care team in mental health care.
  • 1.1. Support multidisciplinary health care team to manage care of person requiring mental health care.
  • 1.2. Contribute to teamwork and positive group dynamics when working with health care colleagues.
  • 1.3. contributions of emergency services, referring agencies, hospital and community team staff and community support groups to the care needs of the person with a mental health condition.
  • 1.4. Participate safely as part of team in interventions involving chemical and physical restraint, and document in accordance with organisational policies and procedures.
  • 1.5. Identify where the acuity of a person exceeds own knowledge, skill and assessed competence and refer to multidisciplinary health care team.
2. Clarify impact of mental health treatment and rehabilitation on the person, families and carers.
  • 2.1. Perform mental health assessment.
  • 2.2. Identify impact of mental health condition on the person, families and carers.
  • 2.3. Identify opportunities to provide the person, families and carers with information on availability and access to recovery-orientated health services and community resources.
  • 2.4. Provide education to promote wellbeing and self-management of the mental health condition.
3. Relate therapeutically to a person with a mental health condition.
  • 3.1. Respond therapeutically to behaviour recognising antecedents for behaviour.
  • 3.2. Acknowledge individual experiences in a non-judgemental manner.
  • 3.3. Identify stages and philosophy of therapeutic relationships.
  • 3.4. Prioritise care issues in accordance with their presentation and behaviour.
  • 3.5. Maintain professional boundaries with the person and set limits for therapeutic interventions.
  • 3.6. Identify own verbal and non-verbal cues that impact the person and others and amend communication practices.
  • 3.7. Seek opportunities and participate in professional development to guide own practice.
4. Evaluate plan of care for a person with mental health condition and support self-management.
  • 4.1. Evaluate and review plan of care and propose modifications according to the person’s progress toward planned outcomes.
  • 4.2. Evaluate nursing interventions and identified outcomes against evidence-based best practice in mental health nursing care.
  • 4.3. Promote self-management of condition and assist to provide accurate information.
  • 4.4. Document uptake of health promotion initiatives to support self-management.
