Description
This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to set up equipment, move timber products using transfer cars and rail systems and to shut down equipment. Work is completed in a forest products factory settingThe unit applies to Production worker (Laminates, Panel and Board, Veneer)No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to move material by transfer equipment
- 1.1 Review work order and where required check with appropriate personnel.
- 1.2 Select appropriate personal protective equipment and check for operational effectiveness.
- 1.3 Inspect type and quantity of material for relocation and check for potential hazards, obstructions and spillage.
- 1.4 Plan moving processes in line with work order.
2. Move material
- 2.1 Use equipment in line with organisational safety procedures, manufacturer’s instructions and environmental protection practices.
- 2.2 Use communication signals to notify nearby personnel of impending operation.
- 2.3 Select material to be moved and loading point, using schedules, orders and instructions.
- 2.4 Estimate material dimensions and weight to ensure load and equipment is stable.
- 2.5 Position and secure load using transfer car techniques in line with manufacturer's recommendations.
3. Shut down equipment
- 3.1 Clear material from transfer car prior to shutdown.
- 3.2 Coordinate shutdown with other line operators in line with organisational safety procedures.
- 3.3 Apply brakes and safety locks to prevent equipment from accidentally moving.
- 3.4 Complete routine post operational cleaning and checks in line with organisational procedures.
- 3.5 Clear material spillage from areas around rail system in line with environmental protection practices.
