Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to perform the duties of an assistant to an Animal Welfare Officer where those duties involve the receival and unloading animals from transport out of normal production hours. This unit applies to those responsible for the receival of livestock out- of-hours including overseeing the unloading stock from transport at abattoirs. These individuals work under the supervision of an Animal Welfare Officer, and exercise limited autonomy and have some accountability for their own work.All work must be carried out to comply with workplace safety and hygiene requirements and Australian meat processing standards and regulations.No occupational licensing, legislative or certification requirements are known to apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Check facilities and equipment
- 1.1 Identify facilities and equipment required for the receival of livestock according to workplace procedures
- 1.2 Check the work site, facilities and equipment for hazards according to workplace procedures
- 1.3 Carry out or report repairs and maintenance of facilities and equipment required for the unloading of livestock and prepare facilities for receival of stock according to workplace procedures
- 1.4 Use and store personal protective equipment and clothing according to work health and safety procedures
- 1.5 Record checks made and action in a manner that complies with workplace requirements
2. Check the documentation accompanying the livestock
- 2.1 Check truck driver compliance with workplace induction requirements
- 2.2 Identify the documentation required for the particular load
- 2.3 Check stock numbers and descriptions against documentation
24 Record stock receival according to workplace requirements
- 2.5 Report and record all errors in documentation according to workplace requirements
3. Oversee the unloading of livestock
- 3.1 Oversee the unloading of animals to comply with animal welfare, workplace and regulatory requirements
- 3.2 Report any breaches of animal welfare standards during unloading according to workplace requirements
- 3.3 Identify, count and record livestock according to workplace procedures
- 3.4 Identify pens to be utilised for the unloaded stock
- 3.5 Complete and maintain documentation according to workplace, regulatory and transporter requirements
- 3.6 Reach agreement on condition of animals with the transporter
4. Perform appropriate animal health procedures
- 4.1 Sort stock, if required, with sick or injured stock segregated according to workplace and regulatory requirements
- 4.2 Report injured stock and arrange euthanising if required, according to workplace requirements
- 4.3 Report if feed and water is not available to animals according to workplace requirements
