Description
This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to lay pavers in Civil Construction.This unit is appropriate for those working in operational roles. Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and Industry sectors. Relevant information must be sourced prior to application of the unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare for work to lay pavers
  • 1.1 Access, interpret and apply paver laying documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
  • 1.2 Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
  • 1.3 Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures
  • 1.4 Select and wear correct personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
  • 1.5 Identify, obtain, confirm and implement signage and barrier requirements
  • 1.6 Select and check for faults all plant, tools and equipment to carry out tasks
  • 1.7 Identify and survey area and location of paving from job drawings
  • 1.8 Calculate paving requirements and select material to meet required finish of surface and pattern
  • 1.9 Stockpile materials safely and within proximity to the work area
2. Prepare to lay paving
  • 2.1 Set out location and shape of paving area to dimensions from job drawings
  • 2.2 Carry out excavation to specified depth, allowing for base and thickness of unit
  • 2.3 Position drainage pipes in sub-soil to local regulations
  • 2.4 Prepare sub-soil and footing in accordance with specifications
  • 2.5 Select base material in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications for identified substrate
  • 2.6 Clean surface free of loose material and dust where paving is to be bonded to substrate
3. Lay pavers
  • 3.1 Position edge boards to set out and specifications
  • 3.2 Spread sand and aggregate, and compact to specifications
  • 3.3 Grade paving surface, where drainage is necessary, to fall evenly without ponding to outlets or surface run off system provided
  • 3.4 Mix mortar for masonry paving to specifications
  • 3.5 Cut pavers to form edges ensuring fit and minimum wastage of material
  • 3.6 Lay paving units to designed pattern and required fall
  • 3.7 Complete edges to specification
  • 3.8 Complete compaction, mortaring and sweeping work to specifications
  • 3.9 Maintain finish level across junctions between different levels
4. Clean up
  • 4.1 Finish paving clean to requirements
  • 4.2 Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials
  • 4.3 Clean, check, maintain and store tools and equipment
