Description
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to set up, align, operate and maintain circular and band sawing machines used in sawmilling operations. The unit applies to individuals who set up, align, and maintain sawing machines used in sawmilling operations.All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, according to state/territory health and safety regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for work
- 1.1 Review work order to determine job requirements and, where required, seek clarification from appropriate personnel
- 1.2 Review environmental protection procedures and workplace health and safety requirements, including the use of personal protective equipment, equipment lock-out and safe manual handling techniques
- 1.3 Identify, assess and take actions to mitigate risks and hazards associated with working with sawing machines
- 1.4 Identify and implement workplace procedures for minimising waste material and maximising energy efficiency
- 1.5 Consult with appropriate personnel to ensure that work is coordinated effectively with others in the workplace
- 1.6 Obtain tools, equipment and materials needed for the work, and check for correct operation and safety
2. Set up sawing machine
- 2.1 Check existence and serviceability of safety equipment, including emergency stops, gauges, guards and controls
- 2.2 Establish sawing machine settings and make adjustments according to job requirements and manufacturer instructions
- 2.3 Conduct trial runs to check sawing machine operation, accuracy, alignment and quality of finished work
- 2.4 Make necessary adjustments to sawing machine settings based on outcomes of trial runs
3. Align sawing machine
- 3.1 Identify conditions related to saw blades and accuracy of cuts that indicate that sawing machine is out of alignment
- 3.2 Check alignment of sawing machine according to manufacturer and workplace procedures
- 3.3 Establish current alignment of sawing machine, identifying corrective actions required
- 3.4 Align sawing machine according to workplace and manufacturer procedures
- 3.5 Record and report corrective actions that are taken to realign sawing machine
4. Operate sawing machine
- 4.1 Complete sawing machine start-up procedure according to manufacturer instructions
- 4.2 Position material to be sawed according to manufacturer instructions, tooling requirements, safe handling procedures and workplace procedures
- 4.3 Operate sawing machine according to designed capacity and purpose and manufacturer recommendations
- 4.4 Monitor sawing machine operation to ensure product quality and output
- 4.5 Minimise waste according to the workplace and environmental protection procedures
- 4.6 Reuse, recycle or dispose of output timber that does not meet quality requirements according to the workplace and environmental protection procedures
- 4.7 Identify problems with the required work and/or the operation of the sawing machine, and rectify or report to appropriate persons
- 4.8 Shut sawing machine down according to workplace procedures
- 4.9 Record production outcomes and equipment faults or malfunctions, and take corrective actions according to workplace procedures
5. Maintain sawing machine
- 5.1 Clean work area according to workplace procedures
- 5.2 Clean, maintain and store hand and/or power tools and equipment according to workplace procedures
- 5.3 Clean sawing machine and leave in a safe mode
- 5.4 Tag and report faulty and/or defective equipment according to workplace procedures
- 5.5 Collect and store unused hardware for reuse, recycling or disposal according to workplace procedures
