Description
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare and conduct non riding exercise for horses using mechanical exercise equipment or aquatic environments, and perform post-exercise procedures. It does not include lungeing. This unit applies to individuals who work under broad direction in equine workplaces. They apply knowledge, discretion and judgement to safely exercise horses in water and/or exercise horses using mechanical equipment, such as horse walkers or treadmills.Commonwealth and state/territory health and safety and animal welfare legislation, regulations and codes of practice relevant to interacting with horses apply to workers in this industry. Requirements vary between industry sectors and jurisdictions.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication, except for the racing industry, where requirements vary between states and territories. Users working in the racing industry are advised to contact the relevant Principal Racing Authority for advice on current requirements.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare horse for exercise
  • 1.1 Confirm horse to exercise, exercise program, equipment and/or facilities and other individual horse requirements
  • 1.2 Identify hazards, and assess and control risks prior to handling horse and starting exercise
  • 1.3 Select and fit personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriate for task
  • 1.4 Select, check and fit gear to horse for exercise program, and prepare horse for exercise using safe and low stress handling techniques
2. Conduct non-riding exercise
  • 2.1 Check and/or set up mechanical exercise equipment and/or water environment to ensure it is safe for horse exercise
  • 2.2 Lead horse safely onto exercise equipment and/or into water
  • 2.3 Conduct exercise according to horse program, and monitor horse behaviour and performance
  • 2.4 Maintain safe position at all times when conducting non-riding exercise
  • 2.5 Reduce intensity of exercise or stop exercise if horse displays signs of distress or injury
  • 2.6 Remove horse safely from mechanical exercise equipment and/or water
3. Perform post-exercise procedures
  • 3.1 Remove gear from horse and check horse for signs of injury
  • 3.2 Cool down, hose, ice and groom horse after exercise according to horse requirements
  • 3.3 Record and report on horse performance and irregular horse behaviour, signs of distress or injury during and after exercise
  • 3.4 Check and maintain gear before storage, and report gear quality and maintenance issues
