Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge to provide care for paediatric persons in primary health care, hospitals, hospices, and home and community care.Paediatric and child health nurses working in the paediatric nursing environment hold and apply specialised in-depth knowledge, integrate theory and practice, and make reliable clinical assessments and judgements.This unit applies to enrolled nursing work carried out in consultation and collaboration with registered nurses and under supervisory arrangements aligned to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) regulatory authority legislative requirements.The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian Standards and industry codes of practice.No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Contribute to nursing care in the paediatric setting.
- 1.1. Identify roles and responsibilities of members of the multidisciplinary health care team in the paediatric environment and support the team in managing nursing care needs.
- 1.2. Work in the multidisciplinary health care team to foster positive group dynamics with other health care professionals.
- 1.3. Provide nursing care and advocate for the rights of the paediatric person, families and carers.
- 1.4. Provide information to the paediatric person, families and carers on community resources and how to access them.
- 1.5. Identify where acuity of a paediatric person exceeds own knowledge, skill and assessed competence and consult with multidisciplinary health care team.
2. Clarify the impact of the paediatric condition on the person, families and carers.
- 2.1. Perform person-centred nursing assessment to identify pathophysiology of presenting and underlying conditions and related issues.
- 2.2. Communicate at the developmental stage of the paediatric person.
- 2.3. Collect health information about the health condition and identify self-management strategies and current treatment regime.
- 2.4. Provide person-centred nursing care to address health condition and nursing interventions.
- 2.5. Evaluate impacts and complications of the paediatric person’s condition.
- 2.6. Prioritise workload according to needs and re-prioritise care rapidly in changing circumstances.
- 2.7. Support paediatric person, families and carers using developmental care, atraumatic care and family-centred care principles, during pre-, intra- and post diagnostic procedures.
3. Promote improvement of paediatric nursing care.
- 3.1. Propose nursing interventions in consultation with registered nurse to promote improved outcomes and health condition.
- 3.2. Evaluate nursing interventions and outcomes against evidence-based best practice in paediatric nursing.
- 3.3. Evaluate responses of the paediatric person, families and carers to health promotion and educational resources, and participate in organisational continuous improvement processes of these resources.
- 3.4. Seek opportunities and participate in professional development to guide own practice and act as a resource for colleagues.
