Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare to install and install soft carpet underlay, carpet gripper strips and gripping edging trims, in preparation for the installation of carpet on concrete and timber subfloors and non-complex stairs.Workers with this competency undertake routine tasks on residential and non-residential/commercial sites according to job instructions including plans and specifications and workplace procedures using discretion, judgement and problem-solving to identify and resolve routine issues. They work with a high degree of self-direction under routine supervision, and they are responsible for their output.The work described in this unit may require a licence or certification in some jurisdictions, and state or territory authorities should be consulted to determine the current status. Workers on construction sites are required by law to complete induction training.They must also comply with relevant legislation, regulations, Australian Standards, codes and manufacturer installation instructions.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to install soft carpet underlay and grippers
  • 1.1 Interpret underlay and gripper strips and metal moulding installation requirements from job and manufacturer instructions and calculate the quantities of materials required
  • 1.2 Identify hazards relating to the work site, work practices, materials, tools and equipment, and check risk treatments are in place and operating
  • 1.3 Select and check all required tools and equipment are ready to use, and organise to fix any deficiencies according to workplace procedures
  • 1.4 Gather underlay, gripper strips, gripping edging trims and other materials required by job instructions, and check they meet quality requirements and are prepared and ready to install according to manufacturer instructions
  • 1.5 Confirm the subfloor and stairs are clean and suitable for installing the underlay and grippers, and fix or report any deficiencies according to workplace procedures
2. Cut, fit and fasten soft carpet underlay and grippers
  • 2.1 Measure, mark and cut gripper strips to length and size to minimise waste, according to manufacturer instructions
  • 2.2 Fasten gripper strips using mechanical fixings and adhesive according to the manufacturer instructions, product labels, safety data sheets and workplace procedures
  • 2.3 Fit gripper edging trims and moulding at thresholds and abutments to other flooring surfaces using mechanical fixings and adhesive according to the manufacturer instructions, product labels, safety data sheets and workplace procedures
  • 2.4 Measure, mark and cut underlay to length and size to minimise waste, according to manufacturer instructions
  • 2.5 Trim off excess and finish installing underlay to meet quality requirements
  • 2.6 Check the underlay and gripper strips are installed correctly according to job instructions and quality requirements, and fix any deficiencies
3. Complete the task according to workplace procedures
  • 3.1 Clean up the work area, identify items for recycling and dispose of waste
  • 3.2 Identify, tag and report any damage to equipment and tools
  • 3.3 Check, clean and do routine maintenance on equipment and tools and store them and unused materials
  • 3.4 Complete task outcome documentation
