Description
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to shift loads using ship mounted crane in accordance with workplace procedures and regulatory requirements as part of work activities in the stevedoring, transport, distribution and allied industries.It includes planning work for working condition, operating the ship mounted crane, locating load and identifying load characteristics, safely moving load, monitoring controls, and shutting down and securing crane after operations.Work is performed under some supervision generally within a team environment.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Prepare work for current working conditions
- 1.1 Traffic flow and work area conditions in proximity of load landing area are assessed and adjusted to allow for safe operation
- 1.2 Load characteristics are taken into account to ensure appropriate attachments/gear are used to move load in accordance with lift plan
- 1.3 Hazards are identified, risks are assessed and control measures are implemented
- 1.4 Occurrences in work area that may impact on safety and efficiency of operations are reported to relevant personnel in accordance with workplace procedures
- 1.5 Ship mounted crane is inspected and configured in accordance with manufacturer specifications and Marine Orders
- 1.6 Pre-operational checks are conducted in accordance with manufacturer specifications and workplace procedures
2 Operate the ship mounted crane
- 2.1 Ship mounted crane is started and operated in accordance with manufacturer specifications and workplace procedures
- 2.2 Communication is confirmed with relevant personnel
- 2.3 Instruments and gauges are monitored to ensure operation is within manufacturer specifications and workplace procedures
- 2.4 Crane functions are tested in accordance with workplace procedures
- 2.5 Faults or damage to crane are immediately reported to relevant personnel in accordance with workplace procedures
3 Identify load characteristics
- 3.1 Working load limit (WLL) of gantry equipment is identified and communicated to relevant personnel
- 3.2 Load weight and dimensions are confirmed to ensure they are within ship mounted crane capacity
- 3.3 Loading and unloading plans are followed to ensure efficiency and safety of operations
- 3.4 Load and environmental conditions are assessed to ensure appropriate loading and unloading procedures are followed
- 3.5 Hazardous cargo is identified and relevant procedures are taken into account when planning and conducting work
4 Operate ship mounted crane to safely move load
- 4.1 Crane is operated using smooth and controlled movements and allowances are made for any vessel trim or list movements during load transfer
- 4.2 Unexpected ship movement is communicated to relevant personnel in accordance with workplace procedures
- 4.3 Simultaneous crane operations are planned and controlled appropriately in accordance with workplace procedures
- 4.4 Communication is maintained with relevant personnel
- 4.5 Work area conditions are constantly assessed to ensure crane movement areas are clear of personnel and other obstructions
- 4.6 Crane is immediately stopped, and workplace procedures are followed, in the event of an incident or emergency
- 4.7 Crane controls are monitored and operated in accordance with manufacturer specifications
- 4.8 Ship mounted crane control faults are identified and reported in accordance with workplace procedures
5 Shut down and secure equipment
- 5.1 Ship mounted crane is shut down in accordance with manufacturer specifications and workplace procedures
- 5.2 Crane is secured after operations in accordance with workplace procedures
