This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to manage detector dogs.It includes the skills required to maintain dog proficiency, deploy dogs in an operational environment and record and report on the proficiency of detector dogs.This unit applies to those working in a custodial environment deploying detector dogs. A person undertaking this unit would usually work autonomously using support from mostly familiar resources but may also work in small teams. The role requires complex task organisation and analytical skills to manage and deploy detector dogs.The skills and knowledge described in this unit must be applied within the legislative, regulatory and policy environment in which they are carried out. Organisational policies, procedures and guidelines must be consulted and adhered to.Statutory/legislative requirements apply to this unit and may vary across states and territories. Users are required to check with the relevant jurisdiction for current requirements.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Prepare for deployment of dogs
  • 1.1 Identify the role of the detector dog in the organisation
  • 1.2 Assess the operational environment where the dog will be deployed and prepare for contingencies
  • 1.3 Consult information on detection situation and assignment details and prepare dog for deployment
  • 1.4 Determine positive indicators of a target odour through repetitive exposure and positive reinforcement
  • 1.5 Assess dogs to determine readiness to extend the range of odours they are capable of detecting
  • 1.6 Transport the dog to the deployment area according to the requirements of the assignment and animal welfare requirements
2 Manage dogs at the scene of operation
  • 2.1 Deploy the detector dog to detect target odours in a range of areas and situations determined by organisational need
  • 2.2 Consider environmental and safety factors when deploying the detector dog during a search of person
  • 2.3 Identify external factors that limit the capabilities of the detector dog to function efficiently and report to appropriate people
  • 2.4 Interpret the behaviour and responses of the detector dog and take appropriate action
  • 2.5 Interact with the detector dog to maintain an effective level of working behaviour
3 Participate in post-operational activities
  • 3.1 Manage detected prohibited and illegal items
  • 3.2 Take part in debriefing sessions to evaluate operation’s activities
  • 3.3 Review the ways in which the dog worked and identify future training/practice sessions and methods of deployment in similar situations
  • 3.4 Complete accurate and comprehensive dog records and reports and lodge within stipulated timeframes
