This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop finished observational drawings for different art, craft and design purposes. It involves developing and refining drawing techniques, exploring media and tools to achieve desired outcomes and finalising own observational drawings.The unit applies to those who work in any area of visual communication and design who use observational drawing skills in their work. They possess well-developed manual observational drawing techniques but may also use digital tools to produce drawings. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Develop and refine observational drawing technique
  • 1.1 Investigate specific techniques and considerations for observational drawing
  • 1.2 Explore ways to achieve perspective in drawings
  • 1.3 Experiment with use of lines and edges
  • 1.4 Examine ways to recognise and accurately represent space
  • 1.5 Observe and depict light and shade using different techniques
  • 1.6 Identify problems in own drawing technique and explore ways to resolve them
2. Explore media and tools for observational drawings
  • 2.1 Determine how different media and tools can create different effects in drawings
  • 2.2 Select and use applicable media to achieve the desired outcome
3. Produce finished observational drawings
  • 3.1 Select subjects for observational drawing projects based on needs of own work
  • 3.2 Create finished drawings that show command of observational drawing techniques and applicable selection of media
  • 3.3 Evaluate own observational drawing in terms of key objectives
