This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to prepare stimulus aids for use with dogs.It includes the skills required for preventing cross-contamination of stimulus aid materials and reporting on use of stimulus aids.This unit applies to those responsible for preparing dog training aids. A person undertaking this unit would usually work autonomously using support from mostly familiar resources. The role requires complex task organisation and analytical skills to prepare stimulus aids for use with dogs.The skills and knowledge described in this unit must be applied within the legislative, regulatory and policy environment in which they are carried out. Organisational policies, procedures and guidelines must be consulted and adhered to.Statutory/legislative requirements apply to this unit and may vary across states and territories. Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Identify and procure appropriate materials to use for making stimulus aids
  • 1.1 Identify the types of odours that can be used for training and working dogs
  • 1.2 Source suitable resources to prepare stimulus aids
  • 1.3 Ensure that the target odour is capable of producing detectable scents
  • 1.4 Ensure stimulus aids are procured and stored
2 Prepare stimulus aids
  • 2.1 Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times when preparing stimulus aids
  • 2.2 Use methods of preparing stimulus aids that prevent cross-contamination of odours
  • 2.3 Vary amounts of target odour according to the capability of the dog and the situation or purpose of the training exercise
  • 2.4 Identify environmental and operational factors that may affect the preparation and use of stimulus aids to determine appropriate use
3 Pack up stimulus aids
  • 3.1 Ensure all stimulus aids are accounted for and report deficiencies
  • 3.2 Break down all reusable materials used in the construction of stimulus aids
  • 3.3 Clean all materials and surfaces used for the preparation of stimulus aids
  • 3.4 Securely store materials for re-use away from sources of cross-contamination
  • 3.5 Complete records of materials used to prepare stimulus aids
