Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to mix and apply water-based refinishing materials in order to refinish a variety of vehicle bodies and substrates. This unit involves preparing for the task, selecting and using specialist tools and equipment, identifying paint defects, preparing surfaces, selecting, mixing and applying water-based refinishing materials according to manufacturer specifications, and completing workplace processes and documentation.The unit applies to those working in the automotive refinishing industry.No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for work
  • 1.1 Identify job requirements from workplace instructions
  • 1.2 Identify hazards associated with the work, assess potential risks and implement control measures in line with workplace policies and procedures
  • 1.3 Identify tools, equipment and chemicals required for repair activity and establish serviceability according to workplace procedures
2. Mix water-based refinishing materials
  • 2.1 Calculate and mix water-based paint materials according to paint manufacturer specifications, formulas, codes and workplace procedures
  • 2.2 Record codes and information relevant to job requirements
3. Apply water-based refinishing materials
  • 3.1 Apply refinishing materials using manufacturer recommended method and intervals, and techniques that ensure painted surface meets job requirements, according to workplace procedures
  • 3.2 Dry refinishing materials using approved methods and equipment
4. Rectify paint faults
  • 4.1 Identify paint faults according to workplace procedures
  • 4.2 Select rectification procedures according to fault or damage type
  • 4.3 Select materials to rectify paintwork from paint manufacturer information
  • 4.4 Rectify paint surface faults using compounds, polishes and glazes to blend rectified areas with existing paintwork
5. Complete work processes
  • 5.1 Conduct final inspection according to workplace procedures and confirm vehicle is ready for use
  • 5.2 Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials according to workplace procedures
  • 5.3 Complete documentation according to workplace procedures
