Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to coordinate outside broadcasts in media industries including setting up and monitoring live feeds and rectifying faults quickly and efficiently. Individuals plan and prepare for outside broadcasts, install and test equipment, establish and monitor signal quality and finalise outside broadcast operations.The unit applies to those who work with minimum supervision and in the context of outside broadcasts, who are usually responsible for supervising others when coordinating outside broadcasts.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Prepare for outside broadcasts

1.1 Determine production requirements of outside broadcast (OB) in consultation with required personnel
1.2 Identify potential problems and discuss solutions or contingency plans with required personnel according to production requirements
1.3 Determine connection from OB point to program centre, conducting site surveys as required
1.4 Check equipment and organise repairs as required in preparation for OB
1.5 Collaborate in pre-production sessions and ensure coordination of production and technical operations according to production requirements

2. Coordinate technical operations during outside broadcasts

2.1 Activate OB equipment on location where required, according to organisational procedures
2.2 Install and safely test equipment at OB locations following industry and organisational regulations and standards
2.3 Establish and maintain signal and communication paths between OB point and program centre
2.4 Communicate with master control during OB from OB point according to organisational standards
2.5 Respond in the event of equipment failure according to organisational standards
2.6 Monitor signal quality from OB point and adjust as required

3. Finalise outside broadcast location operations

3.1 Check, dismantle and store equipment according to organisational standards
3.2 Return OB location to original or improved condition
3.3 Document OB production issues as required according to organisational standards
3.4 Confirm OB equipment is sent for repair as required
3.5 Collaborate in debriefing sessions with required personnel and note areas for improvement
