Description
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to shape debarked logs into round poles to a set diameter for further downstream processing using a machine that shapes the debarked log into a round pole. The unit applies to individuals who round softwood logs in a timber processing plant.All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, according to state/territory health and safety regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for rounding logs
  • 1.1 Review work order to determine job requirements and, where required, seek clarification from appropriate personnel
  • 1.2 Review environmental protection procedures and workplace health and safety requirements, including use of personal protective equipment, equipment lock-out and safe manual handling techniques
  • 1.3 Identify, assess and take actions to mitigate risks and hazards associated with rounding operations
  • 1.4 Identify and implement workplace procedures for minimising waste material and maximising energy efficiency
  • 1.5 Assess logs to be rounded for diameter, species, faults and moisture content
2. Round logs
  • 2.1 Use equipment according to workplace safety procedures, manufacturer instructions and environmental protection practices
  • 2.2 Complete pre-start-up checks to ensure operational effectiveness
  • 2.3 Feed material into the machine at feed rate according to workplace procedures
  • 2.4 Maintain rounding process and adjust to maximise feed rate
  • 2.5 Check rounding process and conveyors regularly, adjusting to maintain desired quality and output
  • 2.6 Reject and dispose of sub-standard logs according to environmental protection practices
  • 2.7 Direct rounded logs to the designated area according to work order
  • 2.8 Identify routine processing faults, and resolve or report to appropriate personnel
3. Complete operator maintenance
  • 3.1 Lock out equipment according to workplace safety procedures
  • 3.2 Check cutters for bluntness or damage
  • 3.3 Remove and replace cutters according to manufacturer recommendations
  • 3.4 Dispose of used cutters according to environmental protection practices
  • 3.5 Complete basic non-specialist equipment maintenance, including greasing and lubricating moving parts and inspecting for wear or damage
  • 3.6 Keep machine clear of dust and debris according to workplace safety procedures
  • 3.7 Record and report equipment faults and maintenance requirements to appropriate personnel
4. Complete handover
  • 4.1 Complete production and quality records
  • 4.2 Brief and hand over documentation to changeover operator
