Description
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to plan, coordinate and monitor stem improvement activities using pruning techniques and/or biological and chemical agents.The unit applies to individuals who plan and coordinate stem improvement activities as part of forestry operations.All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, according to state/territory health and safety regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan stem improvement operations
  • 1.1 Source information on stem improvement planning
  • 1.2 Identify and select stem improvement methods for managing stem quality and growth consistent with product requirements
  • 1.3 Confirm workplace health, safety and environmental policies and procedures, including use of personal protective equipment, applicable to stem improvement activities
  • 1.4 Determine and document measurable performance indicators, specifications and targets for stem improvement operations
  • 1.5 Identify, seek and obtain required approvals from relevant authorities
  • 1.6 Document stem improvement plan according to workplace procedures
  • 1.7 Disseminate stem improvement plan and performance indicators to appropriate personnel
2. Coordinate the implementation of stem improvement operations
  • 2.1 Coordinate and schedule resources required for stem improvement activities
  • 2.2 Schedule personnel, activities, materials and equipment required for stem improvement operations
  • 2.3 Supervise the work of personnel involved in stem improvement activities to achieve planned outcomes
  • 2.4 Carry out systematic checks to ensure compliance requirements are met
  • 2.5 Monitor and adjust stem improvement activities as required
  • 2.6 Identify and control risks and hazards in work area
3. Review stem improvement operations
  • 3.1 Assess and evaluate data from operations to confirm methods and costs are consistent with plan
  • 3.2 Identify and document issues and impediments to stem improvement activities and program costs
  • 3.3 Review stem improvement activities and make recommendations to improve future improvement operations
  • 3.4 Record and report outcomes of stem improvement activities to appropriate personnel
