This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare, run and cement casing in drilling operations.It applies to those working in assistant roles. They generally work under supervision to undertake a prescribed range of functions involving known routines and procedures. Licensing, legislative and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and industry sectors. Users must check requirements with relevant body before applying the unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare to perform rig floor operations
  • 1.1 Obtain, interpret and confirm work requirements
  • 1.2 Access, interpret documentation required to prepare, run and cement casing and confirm work activity is compliant
  • 1.3 Identify and minimise environmental issues and potential hazards, and assess and address risks within scope of own role and according to workplace procedures
  • 1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment required for work activity
  • 1.5 Communicate with other personnel at site as required and confirm briefings and handover details are communicated and received
2. Prepare, run and cement casing
  • 2.1 Prepare casing and shoe joints according to rig operating procedures and manufacturer requirements
  • 2.2 Prepare well heads and casing hangers, running tools, cementing equipment and casing centralisers according to operating requirements
  • 2.3 Check lifting appliances and handling equipment, and identify and report or rectify faults as required and within scope of own role
  • 2.4 Prepare and install guide frames if applicable
  • 2.5 Prepare required well control equipment and mitigation control equipment according to site requirements
  • 2.6 Run and fill casing in correct sequence to required cement line according to operational, safety and site requirements
  • 2.7 Carry out cementing duties while mixing
3. Run cement stinger assembly (non-standard)
  • 3.1 Land casing at required joint
  • 3.2 Assist in running cement string inside casing as per rig specific operating procedure
