Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to realise all aspects of a public art project. It involves planning and documenting project work, creating public art and evaluating finalized work. The unit applies to experienced artists who work both independently and collaboratively.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Originate ideas for public art
  • 1.1 Develop own ideas for work using creative impulse
  • 1.2 Evaluate site requirements and develop responses to accommodate practical requirements and constraints
  • 1.3 Explore options for materials, technologies and processes to fulfil creative, site and brief requirements
  • 1.4 Seek feedback from others and refine through an ongoing collaboration process
2. Articulate and present project ideas
  • 2.1 Develop creative response for public art, ensuring it responds to the objectives of the brief and site requirements
  • 2.2 Assess the durability and sustainability of materials chosen in own work
  • 2.3 Develop formal presentation of concept proposal and supporting documentation
  • 2.4 Present the design proposal and practical planning data to required personnel
  • 2.5 Evaluate and re-work aspects of the proposal where required
3. Plan and document work in response to the site and the brief
  • 3.1 Plan construction to meet specific site requirements and deadline for delivery
  • 3.2 Confirm all requirements are met by engaging with required personnel
  • 3.3 Represent planning and preparatory work using presentation mechanisms suited to the project
4. Create the public artwork
  • 4.1 Create public artwork using command of technique, materials and process
  • 4.2 Evaluate the potential for change as work progresses and discuss with required personnel
  • 4.4 Use safe and sustainable work practices throughout installation of the public artwork
5. Finalise the public art project
  • 5.1 Liaise with required personnel on factors affecting the finalisation of the work
  • 5.2 Finalise public art project according to required timelines
  • 5.3 Organise the installation of the work, engaging specialist expertise where necessary
6. Evaluate own work
  • 6.1 Improve work through discussion with others and apply feedback where required
  • 6.2 Evaluate work against planned strategy and design requirements
  • 6.3 Assess place of own work in relation to other public art practitioners
  • 6.4 Improve technical, conceptual and commercial outcomes by adjusting work processes
