Description
This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to source spatial data from a range of media and datasets and assess its availability and suitability for use in meeting client requirements. It includes researching and assessing data suppliers and information, such as metadata and attributes. The unit also covers manipulating and presenting spatial data.This unit is suitable for entry-level technicians who use a broad range of cognitive, technical and communication skills to select and apply a range of methods, tools, materials and information to complete routine and non-routine activities and provide and transmit solutions to a variety of predictable and sometimes unpredictable problems. Surveying and spatial information skills are applied in a range of industry contexts, including town planning, civil construction, mining, engineering, health, agriculture and defence.All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, in accordance with relevant state/territory regulations that govern surveying work, as well as work health and safety (WHS) legislation and regulations that apply to the workplace.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Source spatial data.
  • 1.1 Clarify spatial data task requirements, including extent, content, intended use, accuracy, precision and format, in consultation with appropriate persons.
  • 1.2 Search internal and external data sources to identify potential datasets to meet task requirements.
  • 1.3 Verify availability of suitable data with suppliers, taking into account copyright and ownership constraints.
  • 1.4 Obtain metadata and datasets from the most appropriate data source according to task requirements.
2 Assess the suitability of potential datasets.
  • 2.1 Interpret and compare data version information.
  • 2.2 Interpret geometry and attribute information from datasets and metadata.
  • 2.3 Query datasets to confirm they contain the required information to meet task requirements.
  • 2.4 Identify constraints of selected datasets to meet task requirements.
  • 2.5 Implement contingency measures where there are constraints on the use of spatial data.
3 Prepare data for task.
  • 3.1 Transform data into the correct spatial reference system and data format to meet task requirements.
  • 3.2 Prepare clear and accurate data suitability report to meet task requirements.
  • 3.3 Use appropriate file structure to store datasets and complete required documentation.
