Description
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to supervise mobile crane operations in compliance with the licence/permit to perform high-risk work requirements and relevant state/territory regulations for mobile crane operations.It includes implementing the operational plan for a mobile crane lift, directing operations, supporting crane personnel in their work, and negotiating and resolving worksite problems.Work is performed under minimum supervision. It involves the application of some judgement and routine principles and procedures when supervising mobile crane operations.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Implement operational plan
  • 1.1 Task requirements are identified from work orders, job plan or operational plan and confirmed with relevant persons in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 1.2 Traffic flow and work area conditions are assessed and adjusted to ensure safe operation
  • 1.3 Checks are made that customer has fulfilled agreed obligations and required personnel and equipment are on site
  • 1.4 Hazards are identified, risks assessed and control measures implemented
  • 1.5 Operational plan is implemented in accordance with legislative and workplace requirements
2 Direct mobile craneoperations
  • 2.1 Customer is kept advised of changes to operation method and concerns are addressed promptly
  • 2.2 Mobile crane personnel are encouraged to provide input to the operation
  • 2.3 Contingency plans for unexpected situations or worksite problems are developed and discussed with site and mobile crane personnel
  • 2.4 Emergency situations are responded to in line with workplace procedures in a manner that minimises risk to personnel and equipment
  • 2.5 Responsibilities of mobile crane personnel are clarified in accordance with operational plan and workplace procedures
  • 2.6 Mobile crane personnel are supervised and directed to ensure safe and efficient operation
3 Support mobile crane personnel
  • 3.1 Assistance with rigging/operating duties is provided in accordance with legislative, site requirements and workplace procedures
  • 3.2 Additional equipment and personnel are arranged as necessary in line with legislative requirements
  • 3.3 Facilities and amenities are arranged in accordance with workplace procedures
4 Resolve worksite problems
  • 4.1 Unexpected worksite situations or problems are clarified prior to site visit to enable prioritising of work
  • 4.2 Unexpected worksite situations or problems are assessed through on-site consultation with mobile crane personnel
  • 4.3 Customer’s perspective on the unexpected worksite situations or problems is sought
  • 4.4 Appropriate solutions to unexpected worksite situations or problems are decided, taking into account safety and workplace requirements, and customer expectations
  • 4.5 Contingency plan actions are agreed with mobile crane personnel and customer prior to undertaking actions
  • 4.6 Agreed commitments are met in a timely manner and undertakings of other persons are followed up to ensure personnel and customer satisfaction with operation outcome
