Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop and perform simple musical improvisation in a chosen area.The unit applies to those who work as musicians and who are developing improvisation skills to perform in a range of musical genres and traditions.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to develop music improvisation skills
- 1.1 Discuss own skill development with required personnel and identify personal goals for improvement
- 1.2 Develop plan to improve aural recognition skills that can be used for simple improvisation in chosen area
- 1.3 Listen to live and recorded improvised music and identify different improvisation techniques
2. Practise musical improvisation
- 2.1 Develop improvisation techniques in chosen area by practicing
- 2.2 Improvise around musical elements suited to chosen area, fitting in with backing accompaniment
- 2.3 Select and memorise repertoire for performance as required
- 2.4 Rehearse with backing ensemble, confirming that own improvisation fits within structure of overall piece
- 2.5 Seek feedback on own skill development during practice sessions from required personnel, and refine techniques as required
3. Perform simple solo improvisations
- 3.1 Respond accurately to starting cues according to improvisation performance requirements
- 3.2 Sustain musical momentum in solo improvisation through dynamic use of musical elements
- 3.3 Listen to other performers, respond musically to their work and adjust own performance accordingly
- 3.4 Observe ensemble customs and conventions, including work health and safety (WHS) principles
- 3.5 Provide clear cue to ensemble to finish solo section
4. Review performances
- 4.1 Evaluate own performance and skill development against identified goals
- 4.2 Seek feedback on performance from required personnel and note areas for future improvement
