Description
This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to assist with quick assessment of disease outbreak as a member of the Australian Defence Force (ADF).It includes collecting epidemiologic data to participate in epidemiologic assessment that identifies disease control measures.This unit applies to personnel working in Defence preventive medicine.The skills and knowledge described in this unit must be applied within the legislative, regulatory and policy environment in which they are carried out. Organisational policies and procedures must be consulted and adhered to.Persons undertaking this unit work in a team under supervision and perform routine tasks in a range of contexts.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Collect epidemiologic data
  • 1.1 Obtain and clarify tasks, as required
  • 1.2 Provide information and assistance to personnel conducting assessment in accordance with operational procedures
  • 1.3 Obtain information about disease outbreak using appropriate data collection methods
  • 1.4 Collect and test data in accordance with operational procedures
2 Participate in epidemiologic assessment
  • 2.1 Analyse epidemiologic data to identify factors relating to disease outbreak
  • 2.2 Compare factors relating to disease outbreak to the treatment information and to the organisation’s response in accordance with relevant instructions
  • 2.3 Seek expert advice or opinion from personnel with relevant expertise to aid assessment in accordance with operational procedures and relevant authority
3 Identify immediate disease control measures
  • 3.1 Identify a range of control measures in accordance with environmental health support plan
  • 3.2 Communicate identified control measures to personnel conducting assessment
  • 3.3 Integrate disease control measures into environmental health support plan in accordance with operational procedures
  • 3.4 Identify control measures outside of team’s capability and refer to relevant personnel to address
