This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to operate in a self-contained regenerative oxygen breathing apparatus in Metalliferous mining.This unit is appropriate for those working in operational roles.No licensing, legislation or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to operate in breathing apparatus
- 1.1 Access, interpret and apply operating in breathing apparatus documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
- 1.2 Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
- 1.3 Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues and implement control measures
- 1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
- 1.5 Ensure fitness levels are suitable to operate breathing apparatus
- 1.6 Carry out pre-operational equipment tests
- 1.7 Record test outcomes
- 1.8 Inspect apparatus for damage, missing components and readiness for operation before entering mine
- 1.9 Put on and adjust self-contained regenerative oxygen breathing apparatus
- 1.10Select additional required personal protective equipment
- 1.11Communicate and coordinate activities with others prior to, during and on completion of the work activity
2. Operate in irrespirable atmosphere
- 2.1 Navigate in breathing apparatus in adverse underground conditions
- 2.2 Identify, monitor and control risks and hazards
- 2.3 Establish and maintain communication with team members and team leader throughout the operation
- 2.4 Apply breathing apparatus techniques and safe work procedures
- 2.5 Monitor the operation of the breathing apparatus and the condition of self and other personnel
- 2.6 Operate in breathing apparatus
- 2.7 Follow entrapment procedures
3. Carry out post-operation activities
- 3.1 Close down self-contained regenerative oxygen breathing apparatus
- 3.2 Remove self-contained regenerative oxygen breathing apparatus
- 3.3 Process written and communicate to relevant personnel
- 3.4 Strip, clean, service, check, reassemble and test breathing apparatus
- 3.5 Record and report any faults
- 3.6 Store equipment ready for operational use
