Description
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to support plant care for Zone 1 permaculture gardens.The unit applies to individuals who work alongside a supervisor and exercise limited autonomy within established and well-known parameters. They identify and seek help with simple problems.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication

1. Recognise plant care for a Zone 1 permaculture garden
- 1.1 Identify key characteristics of a Zone 1 permaculture garden
- 1.2 Identify functions and yields of plants in a Zone 1 permaculture garden
- 1.3 Recognise features of Zone 1 permaculture gardens requiring plant care
- 1.4 Identify Zone 1 plant care requirements from supervisor instructions
2. Apply safe and efficient work practices
- 2.1 Identify, check and prepare tools and equipment according to supervisor instructions
- 2.2 Adopt work practices to maximise productivity and time efficiency and minimise waste and resources
- 2.3 Follow instructions and directions from supervisor and seek clarification when unsure
3. Undertake bed preparation and planting activities
- 3.1 Prepare beds for planting
- 3.2 Plant beds according to supervisor instructions and workplace safety procedures
- 3.3 Dispose of materials according to workplace procedures
- 3.4 Report problems or difficulties in completing work to required standards or timelines to supervisor
4. Maintain plants
- 4.1 Identify and implement watering regime according to plant care requirements
- 4.2 Identify and implement nutrient application according to supervisor instructions
- 4.3 Implement plant cultural activities according to supervisor instructions
5. Determine maturity, harvest and store plants and plant yields for zone 1 plantings
- 5.1 Identify maturity and potential yield of Zone 1 plants to be harvested
- 5.2 Harvest plants and plant yields
- 5.3 Store plants and plant yields
- 5.4 Report plant care activity according to workplace procedures
