Description
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to process standard trade waste approvals.It includes assessing and processing applications for standard trade waste discharges from retail commercial and light industrial organisations; monitoring compliance with the trade waste discharge approval issued; and renewing, amending, suspending or revoking trade waste approvals.This unit applies to those working as trade waste officers or inspectors with a specific responsibility for managing applications and approvals for standard liquid trade waste discharges to wastewater collection systems from small commercial and light industrial organisations. Those undertaking this unit would work autonomously, usually with supervisory responsibilities, while performing complex tasks in a range of contexts.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Prepare for trade waste discharges
- 1.1 Identify significant pollutants generated from different business types
- 1.2 Identify and apply trade waste management processes and workplace procedures
- 1.3 Interpret and apply legislation and policies relating to trade waste approvals
- 1.4 Advise customers who have trade waste application queries according to workplace procedures
2 Assess trade waste applications
- 2.1 Assess the application is properly made according to workplace procedures
- 2.2 Assess standard trade waste applications against trade waste policies and plans
- 2.3 Establish relevant approval conditions according to trade waste policies and plans
- 2.4 Hazards are identified, risks assessed and control measures implemented in accordance with workplace procedures
- 2.5 Determine monitoring activities and schedules and discuss with the applicant
3 Implement trade waste approvals
- 3.1 Calculate relevant charges and review with applicant according to charging policies and formulae
- 3.2 Communicate the approval conditions to the customer according to workplace procedures
- 3.3 Create and maintain customer database records according to relevant legislation and guidelines
