This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to monitor a tailings dam environment in Coal and Metalliferous mining and Extractive.This unit is appropriate for those working in operational roles.No licensing, legislation or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare for monitoring tailings dam environment
  • 1.1 Access, interpret and apply tailings dam environment documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
  • 1.2 Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
  • 1.3 Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures
  • 1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
  • 1.5 Record presence/status of flora and fauna
  • 1.6 Check and maintain condition of mine site parameters
  • 1.7 Rescue wildlife to sustain life where safe and practical
  • 1.8 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
  • 1.9 Communicate with other personnel using approved communication methods
2. Monitor integrity of the dam
  • 2.1 Check and monitor dam wall characteristics and any sign of seepage
  • 2.2 Maintain access to decant tower
  • 2.3 Control quantity of water in dam to avoid weakening dam structure
  • 2.4 Monitor water table depth and water quality and determine source of water and integrity of dam
  • 2.5 Visually check for depositing of unauthorised materials
  • 2.6 Complete written records and reports
