This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to establish animal welfare requirements and monitor practices of the supply chain.The unit applies to meat processing managers, or owners of a meat processing, who exercise autonomy in undertaking this role.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Establish supplier animal welfare requirements
  • 1.1 Identify applicable legislation, standards and customer requirements affecting suppliers of livestock
  • 1.2 Establish enterprise animal welfare performance requirements
  • 1.3 Conduct supplier risk assessment against performance requirements
  • 1.4 Develop and implement benchmarking systems for compliance with animal welfare requirements
  • 1.5 Incorporate enterprise requirements into supplier contractual arrangements
2. Implement and monitor supplier compliance with enterprise animal welfare requirements
  • 2.1 Communicate information about performance requirements and provide training to foster supplier compliance with enterprise requirements
  • 2.2 Establish and implement enterprise monitoring and recording processes according to enterprise requirements
  • 2.3 Respond to detected breaches of regulations and standards according to enterprise requirements
  • 2.4 Take immediate corrective action where potential or actual supplier problems are indicated
  • 2.5 Develop recommendations for supplier continuous improvement practices
3. Evaluate supplier animal welfare performance
  • 3.1 Assess supplier performance against established benchmarks
  • 3.2 Inform suppliers of evaluation outcomes as required
  • 3.3 Make recommendations about future use of suppliers to relevant personnel
4. Monitor, evaluate and improve enterprise animal welfare performance
  • 4.1 Monitor enterprise animal welfare performance in lairage, restraining and stunning
  • 4.2 Assess and re-evaluate established performance indicators according to enterprise requirements
  • 4.3 Confirm staff training and assessment systems are in place to meet enterprise requirements
  • 4.4 Implement strategies to foster a culture of continuous improvement of animal welfare performance
5. Foster and promote the animal welfare commitment of the enterprise
  • 5.1 Assess published research to identify opportunities for potential improvements to supplier and enterprise animal welfare practices
  • 5.2 Select and adopt aspects of research which contribute to enterprise objectives
  • 5.3 Prepare documentation that details enterprise's approach and commitment to animal welfare, with evidentiary support
  • 5.4 Use established systems to promote enterprise's animal welfare performance to internal and external stakeholders
