Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to develop and explore vocal techniques relevant to musical theatre performances.At this level supervision and guidance are provided during practice sessions but individuals are expected to work independently on experimenting with ways to expand and strengthen vocal techniques associated with conveying meaning and emotion through effective delivery of spoken word and songs.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Care for own voice
  • 1.1 In consultation with appropriate personnel, analyse aspects of the human voice, especially those relevant to performers
  • 1.2 Analyse physical problems and emotional states that can affect the voice
  • 1.3 In consultation with appropriate personnel, discuss ways to avoid physical problems and strategies for addressing problems if they arise
  • 1.4 Perform vocal warm-up procedures before starting vocal activities
  • 1.5 Strengthen and expand vocal technique through regular exercises
2. Extend vocal techniques relevant to musical theatre
  • 2.1 In consultation with appropriate personnel, plan practice sessions and strategies for developing vocal techniques
  • 2.2 Analyse scripts for ideas of how to develop character, relationship and actions to suit the circumstances of scenes
  • 2.3 Practise clear articulation and projection of spoken word using a natural voice
  • 2.4 Practise performing with a free and strong breath to support effective delivery of spoken word texts
  • 2.5 Communicate thoughts and feelings to an audience through effective delivery of spoken word texts
  • 2.6 Apply knowledge of phonetics and speech rhythms to develop expertise in singing and speaking in a range of accents and dialects
  • 2.7 Develop techniques for maintaining vocal consistency when moving from spoken to sung text
  • 2.8 Use good posture and appropriate body positions to maintain technical facility and healthy performance habits
3. Maintain expertise
  • 3.1 Maintain technical vocal facility through a range of physical movement
  • 3.2 Maintain and update knowledge of musical theatre trends
  • 3.3 Use feedback from others to identify and develop ways to improve own vocal skills
  • 3.4 Regularly view performances by industry practitioners as a way of sourcing new ideas, identifying trends, maintaining motivation, and improving own technique
