This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to lay and recover cables and hoses in Coal mining.This unit is appropriate for those working in operational roles.No licensing, legislation, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare for cable and hose laying and recovery operations
- 1.1 Access, interpret and apply cable and hose operations documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
- 1.2 Obtain, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
- 1.3 Select, and check for faults, equipment and/or attachments for work activities
- 1.4 Identify, address and report potential hazards and risks
- 1.5 Select and wear correct personal protective equipment
- 1.6 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
2. Perform cable and hose laying and recovery
- 2.1 Coordinate activities with others prior to commencement of, and during, the work activity
- 2.2 Carry out pre-start, start-up, park, shutdown and secure equipment procedures
- 2.3 Drive and operate equipment within recommended speed, engine capability and limitations
- 2.4 Carry out cable and hose laying and recovery, and engage controls to govern speed, direction and tension
- 2.5 Lay excess cable safely
- 2.6 Prepare and visually inspect cables for connection, and mark the location
3. Carry out operator maintenance
- 3.1 Prepare machine for maintenance
- 3.2 Conduct inspection and fault finding
- 3.3 Carry out scheduled maintenance tasks
- 3.4 Return the equipment to service
- 3.5 Process written maintenance records
4. Conduct housekeeping activities
- 4.1 Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials
- 4.2 Clean and maintain condition of equipment, ensure suitability for use, and address/report issues
- 4.3 Manage/report hazards, and maintain a safe working environment
