Description
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to conduct winching operations from a helicopter in compliance with relevant regulatory requirements of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) and national operating standards.It includes preparing for, performing and concluding winch operations. It also includes assessing winch site, developing winch plan and responding to winch emergencies and abnormal situations. This unit addresses aviation technical skill requirements (physical, mental and task-management abilities) related to aircraft operational duties of flight crew and contributes to safe and effective performance in complex aviation operational environments.Operations are conducted across a variety of operational contexts within the Australian aviation industry.Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements are applicable to this unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Prepare for winch operations
  • 1.1 Operation and task information is obtained from communications centre, briefing from supervisor or other sources
  • 1.2 Winching equipment is prepared and resources identified and selected based on task information received
  • 1.3 Anticipated situational and environmental hazards are discussed with crew members and incorporated into the winch plan
  • 1.4 Winch is prepared and checked for correct operation
2 Assess winch site
  • 2.1 Risk assessment on situational and environmental hazards is conducted and control measures applied to ensure safety of self and others
  • 2.2 Requests for additional personnel or specialist equipment for the winching are communicated as required
3 Develop winch plan
  • 3.1 Wind speed and direction are determined
  • 3.2 Approach and overshoot paths are determined
  • 3.3 Winch equipment and techniques suitable to the environment are identified
  • 3.4 Personal capabilities and limitations of self and other team members are considered in the development of the winch plan
  • 3.5 Primary and alternate winch plans are developed based on situational risk assessment
4 Perform winch operations
  • 4.1 Helicopter is manoeuvred to the most appropriate hover position to perform safe winching operations
  • 4.2 Management of winching equipment and personnel in normal winching situations are conducted in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 4.3 Aircraft operational and control checks are conducted as required
  • 4.4 Communication with team members is maintained during winching operation in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 4.5 Winching personnel or stores are deployed, monitored, retrieved and secured in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 4.6 Alternate winch plans are implemented when required
5 Respond to winch emergencies and abnormal situations
  • 5.1 Winch emergencies and abnormal situations are identified, diagnosed and communicated to other flight crew
  • 5.2 Winch emergency or remedial actions are undertaken to maintain safety of flight in accordance with workplace procedures
6 Conclude winch operations
  • 6.1 Equipment is recovered, cleaned and maintained in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and workplace procedures
  • 6.2 Winch is secured and checked for serviceability
  • 6.3 Post-flight documentation is completed in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 6.4 Debrief is conducted in accordance with workplace procedures
