Description
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to operate and monitor a grid operations control room in the electricity supply industry generation sector. This unit applies to proprietary grid infrastructure which may or may not be connected to the National grid.Routine work can include undertaking activities such as the operation of generation plant systems, operating and monitoring maintenance on equipment. Competency in this unit requires the ability to carry out routine work activities in an electricity supply generation environment. Individuals will work, under supervision, as an operator in an electricity supply generation facility.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to unit at the time of publication

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Prepare to operate and monitor work activities
  • 1.1 Work requirements for grid control room systems are identified from relevant personnel and documentation, in accordance with permit and workplace procedures
  • 1.2 Initial check of grid control room systems to ensure work and requirements are in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 1.3 Work Health and Safety (WHS)/Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations, legislative requirements, codes of practice, manufacturers’ recommendations and specifications, and environmental requirements, and workplace procedures are identified, applied and monitored
  • 1.4 Tools, equipment and Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE) are identified and checked, in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 1.5 Relevant personnel are consulted, and work is coordinated on site, in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 1.6 Resources and materials are confirmed, in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 1.7 Schedule of work, including Safety Data Sheets (SDS), manual handling techniques and PPE are confirmed, in accordance with workplace procedures
2 Carry out operate and monitor activities
  • 2.1 Hazards are identified and risk controls are implemented, in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 2.2 Schedule of work for grid control room is followed and work activities are completed, in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 2.3 Work practices for grid control room operations and monitoring are applied, in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 2.4 Alarm response and coordination from relevant personnel for unplanned events are applied, in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 2.5 Response and coordination from relevant personnel for unplanned events are undertaken, in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 2.6 Continuous checks on plant systems to ensure work and requirements are completed in accordance with workplace procedures
3 Complete operate and monitor activities
  • 3.1 Final checks of systems to ensure work and requirements are completed in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 3.2 Relevant personnel are notified of work completion, in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 3.3 Tools, equipment, resources, and materials are cleaned, checked and returned to storage, in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 3.4 Work area is cleaned and made safe, in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 3.5 Records are updated, in accordance with workplace procedures
