Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to use a range of basic techniques, materials and equipment to construct props.At this level, individuals are under broad supervision and are expected to act autonomously within established parameters as they take responsibility for assisting with props and set dressing in the screen, media, entertainment and events industries.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for prop construction
  • 1.1 Liaise with supervisor to determine the nature of props to be constructed
  • 1.2 Select materials for prop construction according to instructions and intended use of prop items
  • 1.3 Calculate correct quantities of required materials, avoiding waste where possible
  • 1.4 Select equipment and tools according to materials being used and type of props being constructed
2. Construct simple props
  • 2.1 Use techniques to construct props, including the safe use of adhesives
  • 2.2 Complete the prop construction process in a logical manner
  • 2.3 Follow safety procedures throughout the prop construction process
  • 2.4 Work cooperatively with other team members to ensure team efficiency and quality of props items
3. Finalise prop construction
  • 3.1 Identify problems with prop construction promptly and take action within scope of own responsibility or report to supervisor
  • 3.2 Seek feedback on own construction techniques and note ways to improve own work performance
  • 3.3 Contribute to evaluations of prop construction processes
