Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to officiate surf life saving at the intermediate level. This unit focuses on the ability to manage competition format and results, apply the rules of surf life saving, use communication strategies and demonstrate correct positioning during intermediate level competitions.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Manage the format of an intermediate surf life saving competition.
- 1.1. Establish selection and entry criteria for participation in an intermediate level surf life saving competition according to organisation's rules and regulations and national trends.
- 1.2. Advise participants accordingly.
- 1.3. Select a competition format, timetable, equipment, resources and team of officials according to the objectives and requirements of the competition and organisation.
- 1.4. Prepare a timetable and distribute to all competitors and other officials.
- 1.5. Implement timetable and modify where required.
2. Apply the rules of surf life saving at the intermediate level.
- 2.1. Assess suitability of competitors and conditions for the event according to the organisation's rules and regulations, requirements of the intermediate level event, relevant legislation and organisational policies and procedures.
- 2.2. Assess external influences, safety aspects and risks prior to commencement of the event.
- 2.3. Observe the event, with minimal disruption, to ensure it is conducted according to the organisation's rules and regulations.
- 2.4. Identify and document breaches of rules and regulations and address these according to organisational policies and procedures.
- 2.5. Interpret and apply the rules and regulations according to current guidelines and national trends of surf life saving.
- 2.6. Make consistent decisions based on relevant information, fairness, equity and participant safety.
3. Use communication strategies to officiate surf life saving.
- 3.1. Communicate decisions and manage the outcomes of decision making while officiating the event according to rules and regulations of surf life saving.
- 3.2. Explain and convey decisions to competitors, other officials and spectators.
- 3.3. Respond to competitors and other officials according to the given situation.
- 3.4. Use auditory devices and signals to clearly convey decisions to competitors when officiating.
- 3.5. Provide and receive formal and informal feedback in a positive and constructive manner.
- 3.6. Implement changes to improve the quality of officiating according to informal discussions with relevant persons.
4. Demonstrate positioning skills to officiate beach and water events.
- 4.1. Adopt appropriate position to undertake roles as a beach event official and a water event official at the intermediate level.
- 4.2. Identify and document external influences and conditions for adjusting position when officiating beach events and water events.
- 4.3. Move to maintain optimal position to view beach and water events according to the rules and regulations.
- 4.4. Adopt position to record results for beach and water events.
5. Manage competition results.
- 5.1. Interpret and document results as directed by the organising body.
- 5.2. Record and process the results of an event or competition according to organisational policies and procedures.
- 5.3. Document decisions received about disqualifications and penalties and communicate to participants affected by the decisions according to the rules and regulations of the organising body.
- 5.4. Communicate information and results to all individuals within the set timeframe specified by the organising body.

Assessment must ensure demonstration of officiating multiple surf life saving events at the intermediate level that are of sufficient breadth and duration to demonstrate competency and consistency of performance.
Assessment must also ensure access to:
a surf life saving event, with facilities and conditions suitable for intermediate level competitors
competitors competing at regional surf life saving level
surf life saving equipment
officiating equipment and resources
rules and regulations of surf life saving.
Method of assessment
A range of assessment methods should be used to assess practical skills and knowledge. The following examples are appropriate for this unit:
observation of identifying breaches of rules and regulations by competitors and other officials
oral or written questioning to assess knowledge of the rules and regulations of surf life saving as they apply to events at the intermediate level
observation of applying communication and positioning techniques while officiating surf life saving events at the intermediate level
a portfolio containing copies of selection and entry criteria, timetables, records of results and any relevant reports
third-party reports from a supervisor detailing officiating performance.
Holistic assessment with other units relevant to the industry sector, workplace and job role is recommended.
