Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to conduct micro surfacing operations in civil construction.It applies to those working in operational roles. The individual is generally a skilled operator and may provide theoretical advice and support a team.Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and industry sectors. Relevant information must be sourced prior to application of the unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to conduct micro surfacing operations
- 1.1 Obtain, interpret and confirm work requirements
- 1.2 Access, interpret and apply micro surfacing operations documentation and confirm the work activity is compliant
- 1.3 Identify environmental issues and potential hazards, and assess and address risks within scope of own role and according to workplace procedures
- 1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment required for work activities
- 1.5 Determine required materials and handling procedures
- 1.6 Select plant, tools and equipment required for tasks, check for faults, and report or rectify in scope of own role
- 1.7 Confirm and comply with environmental protection, safety and traffic management signage requirements
- 1.8 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures and identify steps required in case of fire, accident and other emergencies
2. Prepare mix materials
- 2.1 Confirm material availability for micro surfacing operations
- 2.2 Check paving unit and correct calibration of metering devices to mix specification
- 2.3 Clean and test spreader box for operation according to workplace procedures
3. Prepare surface for micro surface application
- 3.1 Apply surface protection according to job requirements
- 3.2 Note surface defects and rectify as required during sealing operation
- 3.3 Clean and clear work area of loose stones, oil and other contaminants
- 3.4 Set out work area and check a straight edge is maintained along kerbs, shoulders and through intersections
4. Apply micro surface
- 4.1 Maintain consistency of mix
- 4.2 Mix spread according to job requirements and workplace procedures
- 4.3 Achieve surface finish
- 4.4 Remedy joint faults as required
- 4.5 Use hand spreading as required in small and difficult areas
5. Carry out operator maintenance
- 5.1 Prepare machine for maintenance
- 5.2 Conduct inspection and fault finding
- 5.3 Carry out scheduled maintenance tasks according to workplace procedures
- 5.4 Process written maintenance records according to workplace procedures
6. Clean up
- 6.1 Clear work area and dispose of and recycle materials as required according to workplace procedures and environmental requirements
- 6.2 Clean, check, perform maintenance on in scope of own role, and store plant, tools and equipment
- 6.3 Carry out housekeeping to workplace requirements
