Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to assist grouting and cementing operations in drilling. It prepares individuals to operate ancillary equipment, perform basic measurements and calculations, grout and cement hole and clean equipment on completion of task.It applies to those working in assistant driller roles. They generally work under supervision to undertake a prescribed range of functions involving known routines and procedures.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare to assist grouting and cementing operations
  • 1.1 Obtain, read and confirm work requirements
  • 1.2 Access, interpret and apply assist grouting or cementing operations, documentation and ensure work activity is compliant
  • 1.3 Identify and minimise environmental issues and potential hazards, and assess and address risks within scope of own role and according to workplace procedures
  • 1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment required for work activities
  • 1.5 Communicate with other personnel on site as required and confirm briefings and handover details are communicated and received
  • 1.6 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures and identify steps in case of fire, accident and other emergencies
2. Operate ancillary equipment
  • 2.1 Start-up ancillary equipment according to manufacturer specifications
  • 2.2 Run ancillary equipment according to operational requirements
  • 2.3 Shut down ancillary equipment according to manufacturer specifications
3. Perform basic measurement and calculations
  • 3.1 Use and read tape measure
  • 3.2 Carry out simple calculations and measurements of tank capacities, casing and rod lengths
  • 3.3 Record or complete tally sheets for number of lengths of casing placed in the hole
  • 3.4 Record results on reports as required
4. Grout and cement hole
  • 4.1 Mix grout and additives according to task requirements
  • 4.2 Access, interpret and apply safety data sheets (SDS) requirements for all materials used
  • 4.3 Apply grout or cement according to task requirements and using required techniques
  • 4.4 Avoid spillage of grout, cement and additives
  • 4.5 Construct well head, hole identification and install hole security devices
  • 4.6 Dispose of excess grout and cement as required according to site waste management procedures
  • 4.7 Monitor hazards and risks, and confirm safety of self, other personnel, plant and equipment
5. Perform clean-up and completion tasks
  • 5.1 Operate cleaning equipment according to safety and job requirements
  • 5.2 Confirm that cleaning equipment is kept in good working condition
  • 5.3 Complete housekeeping activities to workplace requirements
  • 5.4 Process records according to workplace procedures
