Description
This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to cut and polish a gemstone assembly from pre-formed materials using gemstone and trade accepted backing mediums. It is based on deleted unit CUVOPA206A Cut and polish opal doublets and triplets.This unit applies to individuals processing gemstones in a small or large-scale production context. They use and adapt technical knowledge and skills to produce work that meets pre-determined jewellers’ requirements.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.Band: AUnit Weight: 8

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Determine job requirements
- 1.1 Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- 1.2 Comply with work health and safety (WHS) requirements at all times
- 1.3 Identify job requirements from specifications
2. Prepare to cut gemstone assemblies
- 2.1 Identify and obtain consumables required for cutting and polishing gemstone assemblies
- 2.2 Select tools and equipment to be used
- 2.3 Dop pre-form on appropriate dop stick using wax or adhesive
3. Cut and polish gemstone assemblies
- 3.1 Grind to relevant shape using job requirements or pattern design
- 3.2 Polish top and sides of gemstone assemblies
- 3.3 Transfer the stone and re-dop
- 3.4 Grind and polish backing to job requirements
- 3.5 Remove stone from dop and clean with appropriate agents
