Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to practise as a nursing professional within the Australian health care system, providing health care across the lifespan of people in health and community care services and environments.This unit applies to enrolled nursing work carried out in consultation and collaboration with registered nurses, and under supervisory arrangements aligned to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) regulatory authority legislative requirements.The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian Standards and industry codes of practice.No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Apply principles and requirements of nursing practice to work in the Australian health care system.
  • 1.1. Apply principles of primary and tertiary health care and the principles of wellness to Australian contemporary nursing practice.
  • 1.2. Identify agencies to facilitate positive health outcomes.
  • 1.3. Identify funding sources for health care in Australia.
  • 1.4. Identify political and economic policy and the impact on health care delivery in Australia.
  • 1.5. Apply requirements of alternative and non-traditional approaches to health care and identify their place in contemporary nursing practice.
  • 1.6. Apply requirements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and principles of cultural safety.
  • 1.7. Provide nursing care in accordance with NMBA Enrolled Nurse Standards for Practice.
  • 1.8. Identify current health issues impacting clinical practice and health policy development.
  • 1.9. Identify requirements of the National Nursing and Midwifery Digital Health Capability Framework and its impacts on the health care environment.
2. Identify and respond to factors and issues affecting health in Australia.
  • 2.1. Identify the historical development and current perspectives of the Australian nursing profession within the scope of practice of an enrolled nurse.
  • 2.2. Incorporate theoretical concepts of nursing theory in clinical engagement and practice related to nursing care.
  • 2.3. Identify existing health support services to respond to health issues facing people in Australia.
  • 2.4. Identify and evaluate community health promotional strategies.
  • 2.5. Incorporate the principles of wellness to emotional and social wellbeing.
3. Work in the context of professional nursing practice.
  • 3.1. Apply requirements of and work within the enrolled nurse scope of practice.
  • 3.2. Follow organisation procedures that comply with audit and accreditation processes.
  • 3.3. Apply jurisdictional requirements relating to the NMBA Enrolled Nurse Standards for Practice.
