Description
This unit describes the knowledge and skills required to ensure safe removal of the patient under routine conditions as part of emergency work where patients are not anticipated to have an immediate life threatening injury, illness or condition.This unit applies to pre-hospital/out-of-hospital health care workers.The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand Standards and industry codes of practice.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Assess non-emergency situation in relation to safe removal of the patient
  • 1.1 Survey scene and assess condition of patient in relation to procedures necessary for safe removal of patient
  • 1.2 Formulate plan based on assessment of all factors and with patient’s condition and welfare as the prime concerns
  • 1.3 Identify additional resources for safe removal of patient, as required, based on assessment of the situation
2. Implement procedures for safe removal of the patient
  • 2.1 Obtain any resources necessary for the safe removal of the patient
  • 2.2 Implement plan to ensure safety of patient and workers’ welfare
  • 2.3 Negotiate with colleagues and patient to maintain safe movement of the patient according to relevant Commonwealth legislation and State/Territory legislation, including for work health and safety
  • 2.4 Ensure actions are performed and documented according to established clinical guidelines/protocols
3. Monitor removal procedure
  • 3.1 Constantly monitor removal procedure with reference to needs, condition and safety of the patient and workers
  • 3.2 Communicate with patient and monitor their welfare and any other factors impacting the safe movement of the patient
  • 3.3 Evaluate and modify removal procedure as necessary to ensure ongoing safety of patient and workers
