Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to apply support blow out prevention (BOP) operations in coal mining and drilling. It prepares individuals to monitor and report BOP safety issues and assist in emergency procedures.It applies to those working in operational roles. They generally work under supervision to undertake a prescribed range of functions involving known routines and procedures.Licensing, legislative and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and industry sectors. Users must check requirements with relevant body before applying the unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare for operations
- 1.1 Obtain, read and confirm work requirements
- 1.2 Access, interpret and apply BOP documentation and confirm work activity is compliant
- 1.3 Identify and minimise environmental issues and potential hazards, and assess and address risks within scope of own role and according to workplace procedures
- 1.4 Select the personal protective equipment required for work activity
- 1.5 Communicate with other personnel on site as required and confirm briefings and handover details are communicated and received
2. Assist with well BOP operations
- 2.1 Assist with well kill activities according to job requirements
- 2.2 Monitor and report BOP equipment status according to workplace procedures
- 2.3 Isolate BOP system accumulator according to workplace procedures
- 2.4 Monitor and adjust chokes and manifolds as directed
- 2.5 Assist with emergency shutdown procedures
- 2.6 Participate in emergency drills and exercises
- 2.7 Communicate operational activities and information to other crew during BOP operations
3. Monitor and report safety issues
- 3.1 Identify, address and report hazards associated with BOP
- 3.2 Recognise kick indicators and advise driller during operations
- 3.3 Identify and report ignition sources as required
- 3.4 Identify and report sources and presence of flammable gases and emissions as required
- 3.5 Identify and report BOP malfunctions as required
