Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to meet the assessed health care needs of people with acute health conditions.This unit applies to enrolled nursing work carried out in consultation and collaboration with registered nurses, and under supervisory arrangements aligned to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) regulatory authority legislative requirements.The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian Standards and industry codes of practice.No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Identify acute health conditions.
  • 1.1. Undertake comprehensive nursing assessment to identify acute health condition.
  • 1.2. Identify pathophysiology and psychosocial impact of the acute health condition and confirm nursing and health care needs.
  • 1.3. Identify common aetiology of acute health conditions for common disorders of the human body.
2. Contribute to nursing care, education and planning for acute health conditions.
  • 2.1. Contribute to health education and planning care of acute health conditions in consultation with the multidisciplinary health care team.
  • 2.2. Implement nursing care appropriate to the plan of care for acute health conditions.
  • 2.3. Contribute to person-centred care discussions with the multidisciplinary health care team.
  • 2.4. Contribute to discharge planning.
3. Perform and evaluate nursing interventions for acute health conditions.
  • 3.1. Analyse and problem solve to prioritise and implement nursing interventions to reflect changes with an acute health condition.
  • 3.2. Gather, observe, evaluate, report and document responses to provided care including variations from expected outcomes and concern for the deteriorating person.
  • 3.3. Develop and prioritise the plan of care.
  • 3.4. Implement and evaluate nursing care for delegated elements of acute health conditions based on comprehensive nursing assessment.
4. Contribute to nursing care for planned interventional treatments and procedures.
  • 4.1. Contribute to the plan of care that considers the status of acute care presentations.
  • 4.2. Implement nursing management for planned interventional treatments and procedures.
  • 4.3. Identify and implement post treatment and procedural nursing care and associated documentation.
  • 4.4. Implement post treatment and procedure observations and documentation and report unexpected outcomes and observations.
  • 4.5. Recognise acute deterioration, prioritise and escalate care, implement the escalation process and report to the registered nurse.
  • 4.6. Identify and implement pain management interventions to minimise immobility risks and promote optimal health status and recovery.
5. Contribute to emergency response in the acute care environment.
  • 5.1. Identify and implement enrolled nurse’s role and responsibilities in an emergency response.
  • 5.2. Use emergency equipment in an emergency situation.
  • 5.3. Identify and implement the emergency response plan including preparing and using emergency equipment, medicine, documentation, after care required in an emergency response and resuscitation.
