Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to analyse and deconstruct harmony for its component parts, and to assess the contribution of harmony to performance and compositional outcomes.The unit applies to those who apply high level knowledge of music theory to analyse harmony. They may work as musicians, composers, arrangers, music producers or music writers. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Clarify analysis requirements
- 1.1 Discuss requirements, purpose and scope of harmonic analysis brief with required personnel
- 1.2 Determine methodologies for analysing and creating harmonisations in the context of required task
- 1.3 Confirm musical styles and genres of music to be analysed and harmonised
- 1.4 Clarify required timeframe for completion of task and address any factors that may impact on analysis and harmonisation
2. Identify musical elements
- 2.1 Analyse selected music and identify elements of melody and harmony
- 2.2 Examine melodies and implied harmonic solutions
- 2.3 Confirm that range of music elements meets requirements and purpose for analysis and harmonisation
3. Analyse contribution of harmony to performance and compositional outcomes
- 3.1 Assess the way harmony functions to inform the distinctive character of composition, performance and arrangement in selected musical pieces
- 3.2 Analyse the ways harmonic elements are combined, manipulated and interpreted to achieve aesthetic, technical and expressive outcomes
- 3.3 Discuss aspects of own work in progress with required personnel and incorporate new ideas into analysis
4. Present and review analysis
- 4.1 Conduct harmonic analysis, incorporating theory of harmony and related vocabulary
- 4.2 Compile and document harmonic analysis in required format and within required timeframe
- 4.3 Discuss harmonic analysis with required personnel and adjust as required
- 4.4 Seek feedback on final analysis and harmonisation from required personnel
- 4.5 Evaluate own harmonic analysis and processes used for analysing harmony, and note areas for future improvement
