Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge to prepare compositions for publishing or performance.The unit applies to those who work with publishing house editors or publish their own musical works. They are usually working digitally, using notation software, or using print-based scores. It also applies to individuals who prepare scores for performance. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Establish music composition requirements
- 1.1 Clarify music publishing or performance brief in consultation with required personnel
- 1.2 Negotiate agreement with required personnel establishing timelines, milestones and outcomes against brief
- 1.3 Obtain material and resources needed to prepare music for publishing or performance in consultation with required personnel
2. Prepare music for publishing or performance
- 2.1 Produce clear notation of individual parts of music using software applications or manual notation
- 2.2 Adjust work for particular instruments, including range, tone and balance
- 2.3 Transcribe music from audio sources
- 2.4 Set down work using methods and conventions required for the context and musical style, and according to requirements of brief
- 2.5 Proof notated music and confirm consistency in the spelling of rhythmic, harmonic and melodic notation
- 2.6 Resolve issues with music sources using advice from specialists as required, including copyright clearances and intellectual property rights
- 2.7 Discuss work in progress with required personnel, and incorporate feedback
3. Present and review work
- 3.1 Finalise and present work in the required format by agreed deadline
- 3.2 Seek feedback from required personnel on process used to prepare music for publishing or performance
- 3.3 Evaluate own work and identify areas for future improvement
